Chamber Music in Salzburg

On the 24th day if our trip, our class travelled to Salzburg Austria. During our time here we were able to listen to many concerts as a part of Mozart week. The most memorable and exciting of these concerts for me were the chamber music concerts. The level of musicianship and technical ability was superb. To be able to listen to that kind of quality performance is a rare opportunity.

My favorite of these chamber music concerts was the Les Vents Francis wind group with the Kodály String Quartet. I have been noticing more and more frequently as of late that throughout all genres of music, the best musicians make their performance look easy. This is likely not an intentional aspect of their performance, but is rather an outcome of their complete mastery of idiom. The Oboe player was a real treat to listen to. His approach personified this idea of mastery in the idiom making the performance look easy. I must admit that I did not know that the oboe could sound that beautiful.

The next chamber music concert that we were able to see was a period instrument performance by. I have personally never heard a historical concert with period instruments before. Although the sound wasn’t always pleasant to my ears, it was good to experience how composers like Mozart and others from his time would have heard music.
