Today began at the Mendelssohnhaus in Leipzig. On this self guided tour we had the chance to learn about both Felix Medelssohn and his lesser known sister Fanny. Within the museum there were chances to listen to compositions from either sibling. I found it quite interesting and rather unfortunate that the composer Wagner tried to discredit Felix Mendelssohns works due to his religion.
This evening our class got to see an amazing performance in a traditional Irish style in the Gewandhaus. The venue itself was more modern than other places we have been but just as beautiful. The musicians were all very skilled as far as my untrained ear could tell. The music itself was was very veried in the emotions it could evoke and yet was similar enough that I could identify it as Irish.
While the music was indeed great, what truly captured my attention were the dancers. The dancers, while not the same kind of graceful as ballet dancers, were mesmerizing. The way the could move their feet looked as if the had no bones in them. And at some point I found myself comparing the straight up jumps with no knee bends to fish leaping put of the water. What really struck me as different was how static the upper half of each dancer was. With a few exceptions the arms and torsos of the dancers moved very little. Overall the performance was a joy to watch and even had a
slightly understandable history lesson.
